General Motors CEO Mary Barra is planning to surpass Tesla in electric vehicles by 2025. GM is putting together its battery initiatives in the hopes of achieving 50% EV deliveries by 2030 and 100% by 2035, but there are a few caveats. GM’s targets are oddly specific, looking at light duty vehicles in the US only. Meanwhile their current sales figures reflect poor performance in the EV space despite stable ICE vehicle sales. If the environment changes, companies like Tesla could eat GM’s lunch. Elon Musk also has plans of his own, bolstering Tesla’s raw material contracts and even getting into the mining business to help the industry meet their demand. Yet somehow, General Motors almost has all the raw material supply contracts they need. Finally, Mary Barra drops a few bombshells with regards to GM’s forecasts and also how GM will compete with the heavy duty truck space.
